1. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL?
Define your goal clearly – this is an obvious and essential step to accomplishing your goal of a successful remodel.
Factor in the needs of everyone who will be affected by the remodel, and create a plan together to allow for a functional space that will be enjoyed for years to come.
Having a defined goal will create a clear roadmap for your interior designer and contractor.
Analyze exactly what it is that you do and do not like about your current space, what works and what does not. This will assist you in defining your goals for your new space.
What changes will make your space more aesthetically pleasing, more functional and more enjoyable?

2. WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?
Knowing your cost limitations will allow you to comfortably make decisions during the design process, and communicating this with your designer and contractor will avoid unexpected expenses down the road. Most importantly, this will also assist your designer in directing you towards the appropriate materials that will fit in with your budget. No point looking at $50/sf marble if your budget is $7/sf! What is the space/room primarily going to be used for?
Do you desire an open plan space for everyone to gather freely, or is having private spaces more preferable?
Does your kitchen get heavy cooking use or are you more of a take-out family?
Does your home get heavy traffic?
The answers to all these questions are vital in arriving at a practical and cohesive design solution that will serve your needs well.
These answers will also assist your designer in making suggestions and designing a space that is comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing for you.

4. WHICH MATERIALS DO YOU PREFER?
Considering the materials you want to incorporate is another very important step.
Are you aiming to use mostly sustainable materials?
Do you prefer a natural aesthetic with lots of wood and stone?
Do you prefer a man made or natural stone?
What flooring do you prefer? Tile, LVP, wood, carpet, concrete, cork, etc.
Budget plays a big role here too and may be the deciding factor in what you select.

Is it a rustic look or do you prefer a more transitional style?

6. HOW LONG WILL THE REMODEL TAKE?
It is very important to discuss this from day one and know the answer to this! Your designer and contractor must provide you with a timeframe for your project. Your project design and plan development in addition to obtaining permits (should your project require them) can be very time consuming.
